One of the first thing that any new company has to know is whether the domain name is available. Having a corporate moniker that does not match the company’s domain name is simply not an option. Skype, the internet telephone company. The original name for the project on which the company was founded was, “Sky Peer-to-Peer” and the preference of founders was the name “Skyper”. The problem was that many of the domain variants of this name were already taken so, rather than have a potential mismatch, the name was shortened to Skype. Microsoft bought the company in early May 2011 and it will be interesting to see if the name Skype will survive the transition. The thinking is that it will as it is a well known brand which means that it has a very famous name.

Last but certainly not least, the ubiquitous Google. Apparently Google is a misspelling of googol and a googol is a very big number, a one followed by a hundred zeros. That is more than all the grains of sand on all of the beaches in the world. The name was chosen to illustrate the large number of results offered up by a search.
